Presentation of the Light of Intellect

Rabbi Abraham Abulafia, a 13th-century Spanish and Italian Kabbalist, is famous, but his work remains little known and is often cited out of context. Abulafia is known for his writings on meditation, Hebrew letters, vowel points, and diagrams. Rabbi Abraham Abulafia’s *The Light of the Intellect*, written in the 1280s, is a major but complex work. There are numerous manuscripts of this work, mainly in Italy, but no original manuscript in Abulafia’s own hand. Manuscript Vatican 233 was used for the translation, as it is very well written and clear. The Munich manuscript, although poorly preserved, was also consulted and was the one on which Gershom Scholem had worked. This translation required critical work to establish a reliable Hebrew text, often involving a close comparison of letters and words. The book contains numerous explanatory notes to aid understanding without interpreting the text. The work has a very distinctive structure, divided into 10 parts corresponding to the 10 Sefirot of Kabbalah, and into 38 chapters reflecting the letters of the Hebrew alphabet and the divine names. The book also incorporates the letters of the author’s name, Abraham Sepharaddi (Abraham the Spaniard), son of Samuel Abu Al-Alafia. For Abulafia, writing is almost a form of prophecy.
