Yehonathan Sharvit
Yehonathan Sharvit grew up in Paris in an environment where the study of Jewish tradition and a passion for science were closely intertwined. He learned to read Hebrew before French and encountered the Talmud, numbers, and mental arithmetic at a very young age.
After completing high school, he moved to Israel and studied at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, where he trained as an engineer before completing a master’s degree in mathematics focused on group theory. Two ideas became especially important in his intellectual development: infinity and symmetry, notably through the work of Georg Cantor and Évariste Galois.
A computer scientist, he is also interested in functional programming languages and paradigms of immutability. He is the author of Data-Oriented Programming, published by Manning.
In parallel, Yehonathan Sharvit studies Jewish texts concerned with the foundations of numbers and letters, including the Sefer Yetzirah, Rav Kook’s Reish Millin, and the writings of Rabbi Abraham Aboulafia. His research focuses in particular on Tserouf, the method of letter permutation described by Aboulafia.
In 2026, building on a 1984 paper by Shmuel Zaks, he developed software to visualize the order of Tserouf and brought to light the symmetry underlying its structure. His work lies at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and Jewish thought, bringing together the two themes that run through his path: infinity and symmetry.
